HISTORY
2006 - 2010

The Zihuatanejo Guitar Festival's beneficiary for 2006 through 2010 was La Casa de la Cultura de Zihuatanejo, the Zihuatanejo Culture Center.

The partially city-funded La Casa de la Cultura, is a cultural education center that offers free art, music, dance and literature classes to children and adults in the community and has been functioning in Zihuatanejo for 15 years in many different locations, currently under the direction of C. Belisario Aburto Pineda. The Casa de la Cutura has 287 students enrolled in ten workshops: Children’s Folkloric Dance, Guitar, Art (painting, paper mache, graffiti art), Modern Dance, Salon Dancing, Theater, Ballet, Crafts, & Folkloric Ballet
Xochipilli. The music workshop for guitar now has 34 students.

Over the past four years, the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival was able to assist in much needed renovations to the Casa de la Cultura’s existing building: upgrading bathrooms, classrooms and facilities and purchased office supplies and two office computers for the administration. Proceeds from ZIGF 2010 will go toward purchasing student guitars for the guitar workshop.

2004 - 2005

The Zihuatanejo Guitar Festival's beneficiary for 2004 and 2005 was La Escuela de Música de Zihuatanejo "Ezequiel Cisneros Cárdenas" The Ezequiel Cisneros Cárdenas Music School of Zihuatanejo (EMEC).

The EMEC has been offering music and voice classes in various locations in Zihuatanejo for seven years. One of its aims was to produce musicians at a professional level and train professors of music for primary and secondary schools in the state of Guerrero, where there is a shortage of both music schools and qualified music teachers. The Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival was able to help secure a school building for the 2005 - 2006 school year, as well as provide furniture and supplemental text books.
